Amavubi Stars earned a hard fought 1-0 victory over Burundi’s Intamba ku Rugamba in the newly introduced CAF African Nations Championship preliminary round, first leg match at Nyamirambo stadium yesterday.
Amavubi Stars were ahead on the 13th minute when Atraco’s forward Abedi Mulenda pulled one goal home for the home side to keep the chances alive of reaching the first round of the newly introduced championship meant for home based players.
This was the only goal secured in a thrilling football game which saw the Burundian team displaying fine football Amavubi Stars failure to convert two free kicks, one in the first half and the other in the second half through Bonaventure Hategikimana would have taken the tally to three goals in one game.
Amavubi Stars also failed to capitalize on the few goal scoring chances in the game due to blunt strikers, a feat which left Ntagwabira with thoughts of how he can sharpen his forward trio of Jean Lomami, Gatete and Mulenda. Amavubi Stars missed the services of Bokota Labama Kamana who is fluent in creating and scoring goals after he absconded from team training.
The match was balanced with each creating chances. But the hosts created more clear-cut chances but could not get another goal in the game. Coach Ntagwabira said that he has high hopes of qualifying after the second leg.
"It is only a matter of preparing my team early for the second leg and rectify a few problems in the midfield and striking zone,” Ntagwabira added.
