KIGALI - Police have in custody Manzi Kayihura, the director general of Rwandair Express, the country’s sole airliner.

The development was confirmed last evening by the director of criminal investigation department, Chief Supretendant Costa Habyara. "We have him in custody, he was arrested on Thursday on charges related to abuse of office and that is all I can say at the moment as investigations are still on,” Habyara said by phone.

He said that by today (Monday) police would have completed investigations.
"We shall produce him before court not later than tomorrow and you can contact me for further details,” said Habyara.

It is at prosecution where formal charges will be laid.

Kayihura was according to police arrested on Thursday. It is the same day the airline withdrew the services of a Boeing 737-200, which brought to a standstill flights to Johannesburg, Nairobi, Bujumbura, Entebbe and Kilimanjaro.

"While we await contracting a better aircraft for the Johannesburg route, Rwandair is doing its utmost to re-route it’s customers on Kenya Airways via Nairobi and South African Airways via Entebbe,” says a release from Rwandair. The release, which was signed by Gerald Zirimwabagabo, Board Chairman of Rwandair, however says that since Saturday, flights to other destinations were back to normal.

Rwandair came into existence following the dissolution of Alliance Express Rwanda which had also succeeded Air Rwanda.
