In a move to promote hygiene among the young generation, the City of Kigali yesterday distributed water dispensing machines and an assortment of sanitary tools to 15O primary schools around the city.

The tools included improved basins for washing hands, dustbins, water tanks and many other sanitary utensils.

This, according to the Vice Mayor, Hope Tumukunde, was not a mere donation, but intended to inspire school authorities to enforce sanitation in their schools to ensure the health of the children.

"Hygiene is a necessity for proper education of the pupils because it means good health,” she said.

Christian Karangwa, representing one of the beneficiary schools, said: "We are happy, but again challenged, because I am sure our schools have not done enough to ensure cleanliness and hygiene of pupils.”

Kigali City has 189 primary schools.
