The Executive Secretary of Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA), Dr.Francis K. Sang yesterday handed over RECSA instruments of power to Rwanda as the chair of Council of Ministers.

The RECSA flag, table flags and policy documents were officially handed over to the Minister of Internal Security, Sheikh Mussa Fazil Harerimana.

Sang stated that Rwanda took the chair in recognition for its continued commitment in the fighting the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

He noted that the country has always been at the forefront in harmonizing legislation on the small arms protocol and making consistent contribution towards RECSA.

"Rwanda is dedicated to this cause and it was the first country to harmonize its legislations on arms in line with the Nairobi Protocol,” Sang said.

Harerimana extended his gratitude towards RECSA member states that have entrusted him to chair the regional centre for the next two years.

He promised to coordinate actions against proliferation of small arms and light weapons to ensure regional safety for all citizens.

The National Coordinator of Small Arms and Light Weapons, Emmanuel Misingo, stated that being entrusted with RECSA chairmanship was due to the government’s untiring efforts to deal with the problem.

"The trust and faith members have for Rwanda is attributed to the government’s commitment to restore peace in Rwanda and supporting other countries,” he said.

Misingo called upon citizens to support this noble cause and prevent the spread of illicit arms and light weapons.

RECSA brings together Djibouti, Burundi, Ethiopia, DRC, Eritrea, Tanzania, Seychelles, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Rwanda.
