NYAGATARE–Local Leaders in Rukomo Sector, Nyagatare District, have cited women as the top traders of the illicit local brew commonly known as Kanyanga.

The leaders made the announcement after the arrest of suspected dealers in Rurenge Sector on Tuesday morning.

Ignatius Ahishakiye, the Executive Secretary of Rukomo Sector, said the operation was organised as part of measures to fight against drug trafficking and illicit brew, especially in Rurenge trading centre.

"The illegal transaction of illicit drugs and local gin has become a security threat in the sector. And as you have seen, most of the suspects are women. We thank those who continue to provide information concerning these people,” he said.

More than 20 people, most of them women, were nabbed in a swoop conducted by the police and army personnel.  The suspects were taken to Gatunda Police Station.

One of the female suspects, Beatrice Nyirakabuga, told The New Times: "I’m just two weeks in this business, but I seek forgiveness. I will never do it again”.

Edward Uwimana, a resident of Rurenge, said that illicit brew was rampant in the area.

"They have made it a business. Local authorities should take tough action against them,” he urged, referring to the dealers.
