The fun way to keep your mind sharp

When the holiday bells ring, a good number of school going children sigh with relief! They keep their books very far away, in places where they can never see them to avoid reading them.  However, did you know that reading could be an entertaining way of spending the holidays? Do you know that you can have fun reading while shaping your future at the same time? Reading does not have to mean sitting at a table with a boring schoolbook each day.

Reading can be fun.

If you want to develop a reading tradition, find books that focus on your interests. For example, if you love dancing or fine art you can get books on that subject. Since you already have interest in a particular subject, the books will not get boring. Every page you read will be a learning experience. Reading also helps you to expand your horizons as you learn more about people and the world.

According to Mr. Allan Brian Senyonga a teacher, education commentator and journalist, "books are banks of knowledge, the more you read the richer you become.”

"Students need to know that the best thing they can take from school is not just knowledge but also, the skill of looking for and finding new knowledge,” he said.

Languages are not mastered without reading since no other activity builds the vocabulary and comprehension skills needed to do well in class, other than reading. Students should have a thirst for knowledge. When students read beyond classroom assignments, vocabulary is improved. The more you read, the more information you pick up. You can learn from other people’s life experiences and not repeat them.

Therefore, take time off this holiday, and pick up some interesting books to read. Remember reading is also one of the most effective and fun ways of instilling self-discipline and a sense of responsibility.
