Children are taught at home to be polite to their elders at home, in school and around. When a child is polite, it touches the heart of an elder and he is automatically blessed sincerely from the heart. Same thing applies to grown ups. When they are polite to those senior to them in age or position, sincere good wishes come out from the heart of an elder towards them. This senior person will become their true well wisher. In future whenever there are prospects for advancement anywhere in life, he will be the first one to tell this junior about it, guide him and recommend him for the same. It is for this reason that candidates who go for interviews are advised to be very polite in their behaviour.
One also has to be polite to people younger than them. This helps a person to earn respect and love from them. This also helps in setting an example before the younger persons and encouraging them to develop a respectful and polite attitude towards all.
Polite behaviour with friends and family members increases the bond of affection and closeness with them. Politeness extended to strangers creates a very good impression in minds of people about you. Therefore in public service, workers are taught to be polite to clients.
Some people out of ignorance or ego problems tend to be impolite to others. In this case, if the individual with whom he is interacting is hot headed, a fight is sure to occur. If the person being confronted is soft and polite he will remain quiet at that time. But he is sure to keep the slight in his mind. At the first opportunity possible, he will retaliate. If he has some powers at hand, he will harm this person in more than one way. In case a person misbehaves with a stranger, that person will forever carry a bad impression and talk badly about him.
In case of a dispute between 2 people if the arguments are put forward politely by both sides, the environment remains friendly and some decision is reached favourably. Even if no decision is reached, there will be no ill will on either side.
It is not only important to use a polite form of address for a person but keep the tone soft and respectful while talking. A person may yell at someone while addressing him in a polite form like Uncle or Sir. This is equally objectionable.
A saying from ancient India says that knowledge gives modesty and politeness. This is true even today. A person who is truly learned always remains modest and polite. Its contrast is the other saying that an empty vessel makes more noise. A pompous person with less knowledge may behave arrogantly but will not be considered with regard by other people.
Thus it is obvious that there are many advantages with being polite and disadvantages none. On the other hand impolite behaviour creates only ill will and enmity.
Like charity, one can start being polite at home. Wives are mostly at the receiving end of rude behaviour which can be corrected. Then this should extend to children, neighbours, friends and work mates, If one starts doing so with a firm determination of never being impolite, he will automatically overcome petty traits like anger, ego, jealousy, e.t.c, which are deterrents in making an individual polite. Thus his overall personality shall improve in a positive way.
The greater the number of more people becomes, the more enjoyable a place the world will become to live in.
