The Minister of Health in Kenya himself is a cancer survivor so he knows what it means to go through this torturous disease, that he is now trying to advocate for free cancer treatment; how I wish each and every country would do the same for her citizens.
I have become very interested in the knowledge of cancer that every little time I get, I read books and articles both on print and online about how we can fight this killer disease in our midst.
According to the American Institute in Cancer Research, no single food or food component can protect anyone from cancer itself, but scientists believe that combination of foods predominantly plant based diet may help.
They have found evidence that the minerals, vitamins and photochemical in plant foods could interact in ways to boost their individual anti-cancer effects.
In addition, vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans are low in calorie-density and protect against weight gain.
According to the second expert report, carrying excess body fat is implicated in the development of cancer.
Eating a predominantly plant based diet can help prevent weight gain and protect against those cancers whose risk is convincingly increased by higher body fat -cancers of the colorectum, esophagus, endometrium, pancreas, kidney and breast in postmenopausal women.
In fact it is now highly recommended that at least two thirds of your plate should be filled with vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans. Below are some of the foods that should make the bigger part of your daily food intake;
Apples
An apple a day keeps the doctor away, this has been known for ages that apples contain a long list of healthy nutrients. Now it has been established that apples also contain cancer fighting nutrients which include dietary fibre, vitamin C and the phytonutrients caffeic acid, catechin, chlorogenic acid, cyanidin, kaempferol and rutin. Make sure you include apples on your shopping list.
Eggs
I have ever been told to stop eating eggs, but guess what? Eggs have been found to be a good source of protein and contain a good mix of cancer killing nutrients. One is encouraged to eat eggs, but only a few times during the week, to help fight against cancer.
Green peas and soy beans
Who would have thought that green peas are an extremely powerful cancer fighting food? They contain high levels of copper, dietary fibre, molybdenum, vitamin C and the phytonutrient coumestrol. Soybeans also contain isoflavones which is a group of phytonutrients that are highly protective against cancer. In Japan cancer cases are low because of the daily consumption of soybeans in their foods.
Chilli pepper
Chilli pepper can help in the fight against cancer because they contain a brilliant source of dietary fibre and Vitamin C, and also another exclusive source of anti cancer phytonutrient called capsaicin. We all know that chillis are very hot, so a little bit of it in your food can go a long way to help fight cancer.
Green tea
I take a cup of green tea at least once a day. Green tea's anti cancer effects are well publicised. The main reason this health boosting drink is so effective at preventing this disease is because it contains lots of flavan-3-ols which are cancer fighting nutrients. The taste of green tea is not so good at first, but once you get used the benefits are definitely worth the trouble.
The list is endless from all these mentioned above to foods like oily fish, beetroots, broccoli, oranges, almonds, carrots sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, mushrooms, tomatoes, nuts and garlic. All one need to do is to make that some of these foods if not all are incorporated in their diet. Remember that taking the right foods is a crucial weapon in the fight against cancer and any other illness for that matter, because of the natural compounds.
