The probe team recently set up by Parliament to investigate suspected malpractice in the construction of Rukarara Hydro Power Plant and the Mutobo Water Project, is today scheduled to visit Rukarara for an on-ground assessment of the plant.

This comes after Parliament last week concluded that explanations advanced by the executive regarding suspected failure in the country’s energy and water sectors, were not entirely satisfying.

The seven-member team is headed by Evode Kalima, deputy chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee on (PAC).

"We are now in Nyamagabe, but tomorrow we will first hold a meeting before proceeding to Rukarara to talk to residents,” Kalima told The New Times yesterday evening.

The controversial multi-million dollar project was recently declared ‘sound’ by an engineer who supervised its construction. He blamed low water levels from Nyungwe forest as the sole reason the plant operated below capacity.

Earlier, MPs had said that of the three turbines at the plant, one was dysfunctional. They added that the plant, which has since been privatised to a Rwandan firm, was not producing electricity to the desired proportions.
