THE national cycling team yesterday finished in 6th position in the Team Time Trial category of the African Road Cycling Championship taking place in Asmara-Eriteria.

Although Team Rwanda coach Jonathan Boyer had put a target of finishing in 10th place, the team put in a magnificent performance that saw them improve form 9th position last year to sixth.

The riders were also competing in the Team Time Trial category for the second time with two riders- Nathan Byukusenge and Joseph Bizumuremyi competing in this category for the first time.

National cycling federation president Aimable Bayingana thinks the team is picking up valuable experience in the competition that will be crucial in the near future.

"We are participating in this category for the second time and riders like Nathan Byukusenge and Joseph Bizimuremyi are only taking part for the first time.

So finishing in 6th place is commendable. We are gaining experience in every passing tournament and our results are also improving,” Bayingana said, adding that to excel in the Team Time Trial race needs good results from all riders.

Team Rwanda is being represented by Adrien Niyonshuti, Gasore Hategeka, Nicodem Habiyambere, Nathan Byukusenge and Joseph Bizimuremyi.

Today is rest day while the Indivual Time Trial is set for tomorrow.
