The Rwanda Youth Association for the Promotion of Democracy (AJIPRODHO) has launched a new project aimed at promoting democracy in the country.

The 18-month radio programme was launched on Thursday and will be broadcast on one of the local radio stations. The project promoters say residents around the country will be able to share various issues and opinions affecting their respective communities.

"The project is aimed at building a democratic country where residents can reasonably be able to speak out issues affecting them. Some guest speakers and local leaders will be invited too, and this will help Rwandans address various issues openly" said Emmanuel Nizeyimana, the president of AJIPRODHO.

The project was financed by the European Commission and is estimated to cost €100,000. According to John Mudakikwa, the Executive Secretary of AJIPRODHO the program is expected to begin running next month and the outcomes should be helpful for Rwandans.

Mudakikwa added that the project will be closely monitored and evaluated with the help of key partners. He urged the media to play a leading role in laying the ground for democracy awareness among Rwandans.

Journalists advised that the project be handled with utmost care so that democracy and human rights values are instilled in Rwandans through proper mentoring and sensitization on the goals and objectives of the project.
