RWANDA’s top tennis players have all been handed mountains to climb in their bid to make inroads at this year’s ITF Men’s Futures – Kigali leg.
Rwanda’s top seed Dieudonne Habiyambere needs to be on his game right away when he plays South Africa’s Ruan Roelofse in the first round this morning at Umubano Hotel.
In the other first round ties, Anatole Bizimana takes on Italy’s Sinicropi while Mathieu Uwizeyimana plays Fieldman Spencer of USA later in the day.
Jean Claude Gasigwa, Mubarak Harelimana, Olivier Nkunda and Hamisi Gatete were all ejected in the qualifiers.
Gatete lost to Switzerland’s Lucas Zweili 1-6 0-6; Nkunda fell to Spencer 0-6 2-6 while Harelimana lost to Nigeria’s Samuel Omoile 0-6 2-6. Ross-Hurt Dominic of Great Britain also proved too good for Gasigwa after a 6-3 7-5 victory.
The winner will pocket $1300 (Rwf0.78m) while $700 (Rwf0.42m) has been staked for the first-runner up.
