GATSIBO –The Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugees, in collaboration with World Vision Rwanda, last week donated 1,220 iron sheets to residents affected by heavy rains in Gatsibo District.

The donation was handed to 75 families whose homes and property were destroyed by heavy rains and strong winds.

Handing over the donation, Jean Damascene Kayitana, an advisor in the ministry, assured the victims that the government would do its best to help them.

"Our ministry is and will always coordinate funds and other donations to disaster victims. You lost your houses but these iron sheets are a sign of our commitment to facilitate you during this period of trouble,” he said.

Kayitana, however, challenged them to always construct durable houses to prevent effects of disasters.

"It is a tragedy! Over 100 houses and hectares of banana and maize plantations were destroyed but we are confident we shall regain all our lost property since the government and development partners are behind us,” said one of the beneficiaries.
