Police in Remera, Kigali, are holding two domestic workers suspected of stealing money belonging to an engineering firm, Angelique International Ltd, last month.
The company is taking part in the construction of Nyabarongo Hydro power dam.
Theogene Hakorimana 23, and Protais Nyandwi 25, allegedly stole Rwf4 million and $3,000 from the company’s Assistant Manager, Anil Kumar’s house at Vision 2020 village, Gacuriro Cell in Kinyinya Sector.
One of the suspects, Hakorimana, says he found the money in a locker in the residential house which doubles as the company’s office in Kigali.
He said he convinced Nyandwi, a house-help in a neighbouring house, to flee with him to Muhanga where they rented a house.
"After taking the money, I knew they would use my friend to trace me since people knew him as my brother. So I asked him to come with me to Muhanga District where we established ourselves,” said Hakorimana, who is married.
He said that he used some of the loot, amounting to Rwf400,000 to furnish their house in Nyamabuye Sector where they lived prior to the arrest.
"We were planning to use the money to start up a business,” said Hakorimana, when asked what he was planning to do with the money.
Kumar, on his part, explained that he had withdrawn the money the previous night to procure logistics for the Nyabarongo site the following day.
The remaining money was handed back to Kumar together with the items bought using the loot including two television sets, radio sets, beds, mattresses, and utensils.
