Allow me to respond to a story published in The New Times on November, 1, titled: "Gacaca met expectations – NCHR.”   I have travelled throughout the country and talked to many Genocide survivors and their take is that Gacaca courts handled the cases quite impressively.

It’s simply disgusting that some human rights organizations can seek to undermine the contribution of Gacaca courts in the country’s reconciliation and judicial efforts!

Facts on the ground speak for themselves. Had Gacaca not delivered to the public expectations, I doubt if Rwanda would be at peace with itself, the way it is today.

Obviously, like any system, no one expected Gacaca to be 100 percent, perfect.

Perhaps those groups did, but not any anyone who understands the magnitude of the real problem that Gacaca helped address. I salute all those who served selflessly to ensure the success of Gacaca.
