MUSANZE – The Free Methodist Church of Rwanda has offered to pay health insurance, Mutuelle de Sante, for over 800 people in Musanze District, as part of the church’s community outreach programme.
The initiative supported by Compassion International, brings the number of beneficiaries to about 2,000 after another 1,000 benefited from the same programme last week.
Reverend Michael Gasare said that one of the church’s objectives was to ensure holistic development and social transformation of the people through better wellbeing.
"We also support over 375 poor and orphaned children. One of the goals of evangelism is to change the status of the followers by guiding them to a better welfare. We support the poor within the church and neighbours,’’ Gasare noted.
Virginie Muhawenimana, whose four children benefited from free health insurance cover, said that she could not afford to meet the bills for her entire family of about eight people.
Levels of subscription to the communal health insurance in the district remain low, following an increase in premiums to broaden the services offered.
