Congratulations to Rwanda for officially becoming the 54th member of the Commonwealth.

The new Rwanda serves as a good example to many Commonwealth states including my own country, India. The fact that Rwanda is the only second former non-British colony, after Mozambique to be admitted into the grouping two years ago, speaks volumes about the tremendous progress made by this great nation under the able guidance and astute leadership of President Paul Kagame.

While the Heads of State and Government have reaffirmed their commitment to the values and principles of the Commonwealth, one can actually see how effectively Rwanda has handled the significant global challenges of the 21st century. Some of these are economic reforms, good governance, zero tolerance to corruption, gender equality, women empowerment and the fight against terrorism.   

I wish Rwanda continued success and do believe that it will remain a "model country” in the years ahead.
