BUGESERA - The Rwanda National Police (RNP) over the weekend donated 23 bicycles to members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) of Rweru Sector, in recognition of their exemplary role in maintaining security in communities.
The ceremony was attended by, among others, the Governor of Eastern Province, Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Emmanuel Gasana.
Gasana commended the good work done by the Community Policing Committees in crime prevention, noting that Rweru is among six sectors of Bugesera District neighbouring Burundi, making it vulnerable to cross-border crimes.
He asked the CPCs to speed up the timely exchange of information and to efficiently and regularly report criminal incidents in order to end criminal activities.
"We are going to make this sector an example where others will come to learn how they could use CPCs to maintain security in their respective areas,” he said.
The Governor appreciated the achievement of Bugesera District in general, from handling effects of climate change to maintaining security.
She said that the bicycles were more symbolic than rewards, noting that they had done such a good a job that there was nothing that could equal it.
‘You are doing an excellent job, keep in touch with other security organs…pre-empt criminal activities. It is the secure environment that will help your district prosper,” she told the exited crowd.
Cleophas Munyaruka, leader of Kimvubu village, thanked RNP for training CPCs and its day to day collaboration with the local population.
"Our partnership with security organs helped us to fight a notorious group of criminals locally known as Intaragahanga. They operated in Gako forest terrorizing residents,” he said.
