The move by local leaders, NGOs, members of the National Women Council, youth leaders and heads of schools in Musanze District to back condom distribution in secondary schools as a way of protecting students from contracting HIV/Aids and early pregnancies is welcome news.
For long, we have become like the ostrich that buries its head in the sand.

The debate about culture and morality in this time and age is superceded by the danger that lurks amongst us. The risks posed by HIV/Aids are well known.

Arguments to the effect that condom distribution would encourage sex among the young ones are farfetched. The truth is that cases of early pregnancies in schools are actually prevalent at this stage in time. We should, thus, put more emphasis on sensitising students to abstain from sex at a tender age. Otherwise, at the moment, let students have access to condoms to avert a future crisis.
