Rwanda Military Hospital Wednesday received two Hyundai mobile clinic vehicles worth US$453,000 from Korea Foundation for International Health Care. The two vehicles are equipped with modern medical equipment.

The Senior Deputy Manager of Korea Foundation for International Health Care, Kim Eun Jung, said that the mobile clinic trucks would facilitate the hospital to efficiently carry out its medical outreach programmes especially to the needy.

"The hospital will easily give medical services to people in remote areas. We expect these services to be given out free of charge. If the cars are utilised well, we will think of probably bringing in more,” Jung said.

The Minister of Health, Agnes Binagwaho, who received the donation on behalf of the government, stated that the equipment would help improve the quality of healthcare services.

"The population is our asset. We want to reach out to the people and this is going to be a very effective instrument in achieving this. These tools will help the government fulfill its mission, especially throughout the armed forces fraternity,” said the minister.

She stressed that the vehicles were offered to the Rwanda Military Hospital due to its free outreach programmes and Army Week activities that provide medical assistance to the vulnerable free of charge.

The Director of the hospital, Col. Dr. Ben Karenzi, noted that the facility is at the forefront in offering specialised healthcare to needy citizens in the remotest parts of the country.

"Indeed, as components of the Rwanda Defence Forces, the military hospital is the first point of call during humanitarian crises and natural disasters. In line with the RDF’s constitutional mandate of supporting the civil authority in crises, the RDF medics are always at the forefront of emergency humanitarian assistance,” said Dr. Karenzi.

He added that the mobile clinics will enhance the capability of RDF medics to reach out to the needy and project more capability in handling any humanitarian crises requiring medical attention at close range.

Both vehicles are equipped with an electro cardiograph for checking the heart, an auto clave for sterilising the medical equipment, an ultra sound to examine the body’s internal organs, air conditioner, refrigerators and an operating table among other equipment.

One of the vehicles is equipped with a chest x-ray machine which is a digital radiography system that can be used for screening tuberculosis and other complications inside the body such as broken bones.

Other dignitaries at the occasion included the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Republic of Korea, Min Dong Seok and the Hyundai Executive Director, Jangho Lee.
