The City of Kigali has finalised a detailed physical master plan for the implementation of a central sewerage system expected to cost US$70 million (approx. Rwf42 billion), upon completion.
In an interview with The New Times, the Vice Mayor in charge of Finance and Economic Development, Alphonse Nizeyimana, confirmed the development.
"We are now negotiating with the Ministry of Finance for funding,” Nizeyimana said.
He added that the installation of the system will save property developers from installing individual/localised treatment plants.
Currently, every large complex is supposed to have a localised sewage treatment plant.
But with the central sewage system, all buildings will be connected which will be more cost effective since developers will not be required to put up their own facilities, officials say..
Nizeyimana also said that upon acquisition of the funds, the project would take about two and a half years to complete.
