The United Nations Family in Rwanda grouped under "One UN” has pledged its continued support towards the country’s reconstruction process.

Speaking to reporters yesterday during celebrations to mark UN Day, Aurelien A. Agbenonci, the Resident Coordinator said that the UN is committed to support Rwanda to achieve vision 2020 and the Millennium Development Goals.

The UN Day, which falls on 24 October of every year, was established to highlight the goals and achievements of the organisation. The day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter.

The annual day has been observed since 1948.

"As we mark this day, we renew our partnership with Rwanda in strategic areas based on its comparative advantage such has governance, Health, Population, HIV and Nutrition, Education, Environment, Sustainable Growth and Social Protection,” he said.

Agbenonci stated that the UN family is encouraged by the achievements registered by Rwanda within a short period of time after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

During the event, the Resident Coordinator highlighted key areas where One UN has lent its support in collaboration with the government of Rwanda.

"Delivering as One UN has contributed to strengthening the UN’s overall operational performance and has positioned the UN to be a more relevant and effective development partner in Rwanda,” he asserted.

At the function, the Resident Coordinator and the UN Country Team strongly pledged to further advance delivery as one a reform process for a more efficient, effective and transparent group.

The UN Day has traditionally been marked throughout the world with meetings, discussions and exhibitions about the achievements and goals of the organisation.

In 1971, the General Assembly recommended that member states observe it as a public holiday within the institution.
