Inyamibwa, the National University of Rwanda (NUR), based cultural dance troupe, is in Nairobi, Kenya where it is representing Rwandan universities in the annual Kenyatta University Cultural Week.

The troupe left on Sunday, October 22 for the week-long event, which started on Oct. 23. The event is organised by Kenyatta University to celebrate 20-years of cultural diversity and talent explosion.

The cultural week will also feature performances from solo performances, martial arts, dramatic theatre, among other activities.

The Inyamibwa troupe was initiated by talented AERG members, who put their dancing skills as part of an income generating activity to benefit them.

Kabanda J. De Dieu, the Vice President of Inyamibwa, told The New Times that the troupe is composed of professional dancers who perform traditional dances such as ‘Intore’, ‘Amahamba’, and ‘Imishayayo’.

With weddings taking place almost every weekend, the troupe is often hired to perform which has proved to be a successful source of income for its members and AERG. 

AERG is a French acronym "Association des Etudiants et Elèves Rescapés du Genocide.” The association was created on October 20, 1996 by survivors of the 1994 Rwanda genocide against the Tutsi, who were then students at the National University of Rwanda.

The organisation is run by students for students.
