Hip-hop dancers, comedians and recording artistes from all corners of Kigali, turned up for the United Nations Day celebration, Saturday, October 22.

Hosted by the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr Aurélien A. Agbénonci, the event was held at Amahoro Stadium – Circus Tent, in Kigali from 6.30pm.

This year’s celebration was marked by the 10th anniversary of the international year of volunteers and the 7th billion baby campaign.

The performances started at 7p.m and artistes delivered lively performances containing powerful messages.

First on the stage was a group of comedians, followed by a fantastic dance/theatre performance by songbird Rosette. The act was flavoured by a group of Hip-hop dancers, who brought to the stage vibrant moves.

Kamichi later claimed the show with kids in his rendition of ‘Twa Dushaza’. The singer also teamed up with dazzling Shanel as the duo bedazzled the crowd, with his song ‘Magirirane’, a song Kamichi wrote specifically for the UN Day.

Notable at the event were the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture Edward Kalisa, UN and UNICEF officials, government officers, among others. 

Recording artistes Shanel, Mani Martin and Rosette offered beautiful renditions of Nas’ ‘I Know I Can [Be What I Wanna Be]’ and ‘Lean on Me’ by Bill Withers, before the attendees were treated to a cocktail.

The performances showcased the importance of children and their rights to live. It was a reminder of the responsibility of individuals and communities to protect children from all forms of violence and to help them become better people in society.
