Rwanda has for the second time running, been ranked as least corrupt country in the region according to this year`s East African Bribery Index (EABI).

Championed by Transparency Kenya (TK), the survey indicates that the country is progressing in its mechanisms to curb corruption based on improvements registered compared to its rating last year.

This year, Rwanda recorded a bribery prevalence of 5.1down from 6.6 percent last year.

The report further indicates that in some countries corruption is increasing.

Burundi was ranked most bribery prone country with its ranking hitting a prevalence level of 37.9 up from 36.7 percent.

Kenya moved from third place to second recording 28.8 from 31.9 percent.

Uganda is at 33.9 up from 33 percent while Tanzania is at 31.6 from 28.6 percent registered last year.

Addressing the media, the chairperson of Transparency Rwanda (TR), Marie Immaculee Ingabire, observed that although the country is registering improvement in fighting bribery compared to other countries, there is a lot that needs to be done, especially within institutions.

"The effect of bribery to citizens creates a dangerous situation,” Ingabire said.

The report indicates that Uganda police is most corrupt with a bribery prevalence of 80.8 percent, followed by Burundi with 75.0 percent.

Burundi Revenue Authority is at 68.5, Kenya police 68.0 and Uganda Revenue Authority at 64.8 percent.
