The soul searching concluded at the weekend when voters elected a new president of Rwandan football federation, Ferwafa.

The former CAF/FIFA referee Celestin Ntagungira a.k.a Abega’s election on Saturday is no less momentous event, coming at the backdrop of resignations of the former officials.

He replaces Brig. Gen. Jean Bosco Kazura, who resigned in September due to what he said were personal reasons.

There are many important tasks facing the new president, including putting the whole house in order.

The Ferwafa president and the office he will preside over for the next two years carry a heavy responsibility – revamping the Rwandan football from the grassroots to the senior level.

We must have a federation which is competent and independent enough to carry out its task.

Clearly, the new president has a tough job. The leader of this federation deserves the full support of all Rwandans interested in the success of our sporting campaigns.

We must stand with him and pursue national pride in football and other sporting activities.

No easy task for morale and confidence in the national football team is waning.

Ntagungira must rely on all Rwandans to succeed in this uphill task –seeking home grown solutions to our challenges.

Commitment to local football is key, as is ability to lead a team effectively.

The president must, above all else, have the skill to build, pursue and professionalize the national league while deftly maintaining the confidence of players and fans.
