The Ministry of Education, through the Rwanda Education Board (REB), last Friday donated 570 desktop computers to Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) around the country.

According to the Ministry, of the 11 TTCs in the country, each of them received 57 computers.

Speaking at the function held at REB offices in Remera, the State Minister in charge of Primary and Secondary Education, Dr Mathias Harebamungu, said: "The main objective of donating these computers is to promote an ICT-based education sector in all TTCs in the country because teachers are the foundation of any development in every country”.

The minister requested the beneficiaries to take good care of the equipment and to use them efficiently saying that this will help them to improve their skills.

John Rutayisire, the Director General of REB, told The New Times that the computers are worth Rwf 200 million.

"In this era, you cannot develop without the use of ICT, so I believe this donation will enable the beneficiaries to easily execute their respective duties and help the country get teachers who are computer literate,” Rutayisire said.

He told members of TTCs that REB, in partnership with MINEDUC, will also extend to them internet services in order to have easy access to any information they need which can improve their learning.

Brother Gisagara Kayishema, the head of Save Teacher Training College in Huye District thanked the ministry, and the government in general, for the computers.

"I am optimistic that this will enable us acquire the basic knowledge and skills regarding ICT,” he said.

Kayishema added that the equipment will also enable them to carryout research on how best they can improve their profession and to always be informed in various issues in the education sector.

He requested the authorities to extend similar donations to all teachers, both on primary and secondary schools.
