EASTERN PROVINCE

Nyagatare – Mayor Robert Kashemeza has assigned itself to increasing agricultural production of maize and banana plantations in line with federal performance contracts.

The district is to start the campaign next season in response to President Paul Kagame’s initiative to increase agricultural production in the country in what is described as the "green revolution” of Rwanda’s agricultural system.

"In response to the presidential initiative to revolutionize agriculture, Nyagatare district was assigned to grow maize, rice and banana plantations on a large scale.

Farmers will be able to earn a living,” Kashemeza said.

"Residents are in desperate need of food aid, but we are fed up of depending of food handouts from WFP.”

Minister of Agriculture Anastase Murekezi told Nyagatare farmers that the green revolution was expected to increase agricultural production, which would also enhance the development of social security in the country.
