KICUKIRO - Kicukiro district Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Florence Uwayisaba, yesterday called upon district residents to ensure sanitation within their communities.

She made the remarks during the launch of the ‘Hygiene Promotion Week” in the district.

"Places like kitchens, bedrooms, toilets and latrines should be kept clean without forgetting to wash our hands with soap after visiting these places,” Uwayisaba said.

She pointed out that it should be everyone’s responsibility to identify cases that might lead to disease out-breaks and collectively work towards checking them as a community.

Uwayisaba told residents to also keep their compounds green, saying this would also help in controlling soil erosion.

The event that will involve various activities aimed at creating awareness on hygiene measures is being marked in collaboration with Organic Solutions Rwanda Ltd.

The company which is working in over 20 districts provides Organic Solutions Secondary (OSS)-a liquid poured in latrines to facilitate decomposition of human waste and ward off foul smell.

In an interview, Eriko Nishimura, an official from the company, said that the liquid would be sold at the lowest price possible to enable the public to easily acquire it.

"According to our survey, at least schools, hospitals, public and private institutions are in good conditions. However, most community latrines are not,” Nishimura observed.

"Now our target is the community. So in this campaign, we shall sell a litre at Rwf 300, down from Rwf 600.”
