Two people have been arrested for drug dealing, police has said. Mutuyeyezu Eugène 34, and Mukamana Mathilde, 33, are in police custody in connection with the trading of marijuana, also known as cannabis.

Police spokesman, Inspector Willy Marcel Higiro said on Monday that Mutuyeyezu and Mukamana were arrested on Sunday in Gisozi and Kinyinya sectors in Gasabo district respectively.

He said that the two would be charged with trading in illegal drugs and investigations are still going on to establish whether there were more people engaged in the same activity.

He also said that people who use, deal, or in one way or the other, involve in drug abuse, face same charges, and they could face a sentence of five or more years in jail.

He revealed that Gisozi police station was tipped off that Mutuyeyezu had come from Nyabugogo tax Park with Marijuana.

When the police arrested him, he said that the drugs were brought from Democratic Republic of Congo but denied they belonged to him saying he was just keeping them for someone else.

Higiro said that Mutuyeyezu had a package of 35,000 small bundles of well packed dry marijuana which he took on a motorcycle from Nyabugogo to Gisozi.

Mukamana was coincidentaly arrested on the same day under the Community Policing efforts. She had leaves and seeds of the drugs in her house.

She said that she had kept the marijuana on the request of  one,Innocent Ndayambaje, who she claimed gave her the sacks claiming that there were some precious things which would help both of them but acknowledged her mistake.

Mutuyeyezu said that when he was in Nyabugogo, he met someone known as Donati Nyakayiro who gave him Frw5000 and requested him to take the marijuanato Gisozi but that he took the package knowing that he was taking Marijuana.

Marijuana is a dry, shredded mix of flowers, stems, seeds and leaves of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. People usually smoke it as a cigarette or in a pipe. It is the most commonly abused illegal drug in Rwanda, just like other more countries.

Abusing marijuana can result in problems with memory, learning and social behaviour. Scientific studies are underway to test the safety and usefulness of cannabis compounds for treating certain medical conditions.

Currently, smoking marijuana is not recommended for the treatment of any disease or condition.
