Early in the morning the roads are filled with several children going to school. Some of them are driven to school by their parents, others use the school bus, motorcycles or bicycles while most of them walk.

Those parents who choose to hire motorcyclists to transport their children should be extra sensitive because it is risky. Thank God for the law put in place by the Rwanda National Police that ensures that not more than one child is carried on a motorcycle.

Even with this law, there are many motorists who disobey the rules. They are not seen on the main road but on the feeder roads that lead to different schools. Sometimes as many as three children are carried without helmets. This is very dangerous. Motorists are always rushing to take many children to and from, different schools. This causes accidents.

Sometimes the children, who walk to school, are the most vulnerable to motor accidents.

I therefore call upon, all school administrations, parents and drivers to ensure that children are safe on the roads. If possible, schools should provide school buses to transport these precious children.

It is also the role of the society to keep an eye on children especially when they are going to school in the morning, lunchtime and evening hours.
