Editor, I recently visited Musanze District and I was amazed by several projects aimed at helping former poachers lead a better life. A move initiated by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in 2002, to encourage poachers to abandon thier harmful practices, has not only saved wildlife, but has also resulted in the development of communities surrounding game parks. I visited an association of former poachers known as Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village located in Kinigi and the group is doing a great job in conserving the environment in the Virunga Mountains.
Editor,
I recently visited Musanze District and I was amazed by several projects aimed at helping former poachers lead a better life.
The former poachers are also involved in activities aimed at sensitising those still carrying out poaching. It is a positive development to see that ex-poachers have started income generating activities like basket weaving to earn a living.
