Demolition of structures in wetlands boon to environment

Editor,

The move by Kigali City Council and Rwanda Environment Management Authority against illegal structures in Kigali is commendable and should be maintained. Rwandans need to know that construction of structures in wetlands is illegal and negatively impacts on our environment.

We appreciate the partnership between the public, KCC and REMA which is steadily growing in line with country’s efforts to ensure that we live in a safe and well managed environment.

Demolition of illegal structures near Giti Kinyoni and in Nyabugogo near City Valley recently has served as a warning. However, there are still other buildings located in Nyabugogo that do not conform to the Environmental Law.

REMA needs to undertake a similar exercise all over the country.
