Local basketball powerhouses Rwanda Energy Group (REG) and The Patriots have launched their playoff campaign on a flying note, as each won its first semi-final tie convincingly.

REG defeated APR 85-47 on Friday evening at Kepler University Court, while The Patriots overcame Tigers Basketball Club 91-45 on the same day at Aiper-Nyandungu Court.

The playoff semi-finals are being played on a best-of-three basis.

By the end of this week, all the semi-final games are expected to be completed and then the finals will follow.

During the REG vs APR game, Cameroonian power forward Beleck Engelbert scored a game-high 19 points as his team dominated the tie.

American shooting guard Cleveland Thomas Jr, Rwandan power forwards Elie Kaje and Axel Mpoyo also made key contributions in terms of scoring and supplying the ball.

Kaje and Thomas scored 11 and 22 points respectively.

Meanwhile, in the women’s category, the playoffs tipped off on the same day as well.

Here, REG won their first game against The Hoops 71-47, while APR beat IPRC-Huye 69-56 in the best-of-three semi-finals.
