FORMER champions, Lion de Fer may have registered their biggest win of the 2008 National Super League after Sunday’s 71-0 victory over Puma in Kamonyi.

Star forward Papy Olivier was in peak form as he made five tries and two conversions to inspire the Nyamirambo based side to their first win of the league.

The victory left the 2006 champions in pole position ahead of Buffalos and Tigers; the only other clubs with victories in this year’s campaign.

Lion de Fer coach Jean de la Paix Hategekimana was full of praise for his team despite fielding a number of youngsters.

"The result is a confidence booster for us ahead of what will be a very tight title race. We fielded a number of youngsters but their performances were up there so there is every reason to say that the team is on course for this campaign," Hategekimana reckoned.

"The team played so well. We stuck to our task and getting such a score is a big bonus to the boys," Lion de Fer’s Olivier added. In the other tie, Alphonse Kabayiza converted the all important penalty to inspire Tigers to a 3-0 win over sharks.

Two weeks into the league, the local rugby federation is still working round the clock to find a sponsor for the league.
