KACYIRU - Members of the public were, yesterday, urged to join the struggle against Gender Based Violence (GBV).

This was during the launch of the anti-GBV campaign, which will run until October 16.

The launch kicked off with the inauguration of the new GBV facility at The Police Headquarters in Kacyiru, where victims of GBV and children will be treated and counseled, among other services.

The Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel Gasana, urged the thousands of Rwandans, who gathered at Petite stadium to be an eye for their neighbors.

"Police alone can’t know whatever is happening in every home. You should keep an eye and report any cases of GBV that you see in your neighborhood or even your own homes,” Gasana said.

He further noted that, throughout this week, police will be sensitizing the public on Gender based violence so they can know how to handle it,

The Minister of Gender, Aloisea Inyumba, commended the police for the great work they are doing in fighting against GBV.

"The Police’s struggle to fight against GBV shows that they care about the Rwandans’ wellbeing. The Ministry of Gender and Gender Monitoring office is working closely with them to ensure that this fight is country wide,” Inyumba said.

Sylvia Kabagwira Syhaka, a senior four student from GSMK APACE School, said that she was unaware of some of her rights and the toll free lines to call whenever her rights are being violated.

She added that there are anti-GBV clubs in her school that have proved to be effective in the struggle since students can know whether they or their parents are victims of GBV and then report to the authorities.

The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Security, Fazil Harerimana, Mayor of Kigali, Fidele Ndayisaba and Imaculate Ingabire, the Coordinator of Rwanda’s National Coalition on Fighting Violence against women.
