Selection for the provisional U-17 national team will be done later this week ahead of the African Youth Championship qualifiers set to start next month.

Rwanda’s U-17 side will face Kenya in the first leg of the preliminary round of the 8th edition of the African championship whose finals are due next year in Algeria.

Ferwafa, through their regional coordinators are to select a total of 100 players from all four provinces as well as Kigali city.

"We will invite all the 100 players for final trials in Kigali. After that, we will have 30 players in the team going for residential training in the first week of April," said Jules Kalisa, Ferwafa CEO.

He added, "Everybody among the 100 players will have an equal chance of getting into the final squad but it’s upon each one of them to prove his ability".

Last year, Ferwafa appointed five regional coordinators, stationed in each of the four Provinces and Kigali city whose role is to assist the federation lift football standards in the country from the grassroot.

They include: Sosteine Habineza (South) Innocent Seminega (West), Vincent Mashami (East), Theonase Ndaguza (North), and Aloys Kanamugire (Central).

Rwanda’s U-17 national team will face Kenya on April 11-13 in the first leg which will be played in Kigali with the return leg to be played in Nairobi a fortnight later.

The winner between Kenya and Rwanda will face Sudan in the first round of the qualifiers on August 29-30.

Last year’s Under-17 which was managed by Coach Aloys Kanamugire knocked out Somalia 3-0 in the first round before bowing out after losing to eventual winners Nigeria in the second round. Nigeria beat Togo 1-0 in the finals.

Meanwhile, Nigeria, Tunisia, Ghana, South Africa, Gabon, Burkina Faso, Eritrea, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Zambia, Angola, Cameroon, Gambia, Guinea, Benin, Botswana, Sudan and Libya have all landed byes to the second round.
