BURERA- Local authorities in Burera District have destroyed illicit drugs and alcohol worth Rwf4m, seized from traffickers last week.

Over 1400 litres of illicit brew and over 200 kilograms of marijuana were set ablaze in an exercise held in Kirambo Sector of the district.

The items are trafficked from the neigbouring Kisoro district in Uganda.

The District Police Commander, Supt. Felix Rutayisire, said that the drugs were seized from several parts of the district, and the traffickers involved have been arrested and prosecuted.

Many residents gathered to witness the destruction of the illicit drugs, some of whom gave testimonies of the effects of drug abuse and how they managed to abandon the habit.

The District Mayor, Samuel Sembagari, warned residents against facilitating drug trafficking and desist from drinking the illicit local gin, commonly known as kanyanga.

"This has been a big source of domestic violence and poverty,’’ Sembagari said.

It was reported that several people formerly involved in drug trafficking in Rugarama area have abandoned the activity and formed a vigilante group to assist police in fighting against the illegal trade.
