Gatsibo District has set up an elders’ union with the aim of gathering their views to contribute towards the development of the district.

The district’s mayor, Ambrose Ruboneza, explained that the role of elders is critical in development.

"We want to develop our district like a person building a strong house,” he said.

"These elders are much valued and act as a foundation stone mainly by playing the advisory role. They will be monitoring and evaluating us in governance.”

The Mayor added that the elder’s union would be charged with arbitrating community wrangles, helping district authorities in fighting against corruption, among others.

"They will be helping us in solving these issues in a common Rwandan traditional way. They will also be advising us on development priorities,” he said.

Didace Twasinga Rucicyuma, who was elected as the union president, told The New Times, that they were impressed by the district’s call for their role in the development of the district.

"We have a lot in store to offer and develop our district. We shall not only be providing administrative advice but also mobilise residents to work hard and maintain social welfare,” he said.
