KARONGI- Teachers and students in the Western Province yesterday joined the rest of the world to commemorate the Teachers Day.

At colourful ceremonies organised in each of the seven districts, the teachers were encouraged to embrace hard work while at the same time upholding professional ethics.

In Karongi District, teachers said that the day helps them to discuss and seek solutions to their problems in a bid to provide quality education.

"Such an international day helps us to gather and share ideas as members of the education sector,” said Patrice Murwanashyaka, the head teacher at Groupe Scolaire Bubazi.

He encouraged fellow teachers to be passionate about their work since it is the best way to help students understand what they are taught.

Most teachers who talked to The New Times mentioned that the education sector needs to be further empowered so as to facilitate quality education.

During the function, Yves Ningabire, Karongi District Executive Secretary, challenged the teachers to think widely and endeavour to be updated so as to cope with the fast moving technology and global development.

"Each of you should ensure that your work contributes towards national development. It’s necessary to set targets and a timeframe to achieve what you plan to do,” he said.

He encouraged them to adopt better methods of teaching in order to instill good character into their students.

Ningabire challenged the teachers to frequently discuss problems in order to find home grown solutions.

The Executive Secretary pledged support towards improving the sector.
