MUHANGA- The Governor of the Southern Province has called on local leaders to work towards attaining the set national development programmes.

Alphonse Munyentwari, made the remarks, Tuesday, while handing over certificates of excellence to over 3,000 outgoing local council members who served between 2006 to 2011.

The colourful function was held at the district’s cultural centre.

It was preceded by a two-day training workshop on good governance, security, and environmental protection involving more than 300 village leaders from the district.

"There is a great demand for leaders who are abreast with the development programmes. Leaders should work hard and set a good example,” he said.

The governor commended local leaders in the District for their contribution towards implementation of district performance contracts which enabled the district to emerge among the best countrywide.

Promoting security and unity, he added, would enable communities to focus on improving their welfare.

The Mayor of Muhanga, Yvonne Mutakwasuku, told local leaders to use their powers to serve the interests of the people. 

"Without grassroots leaders nothing can be achieved. You have been entrusted to represent the interests of the government and the people,” Mutakwasuku remarked during her presentation on leadership.

"Such training is needed since some of the leaders have the will to lead but lack capacity,” Antione Mutama, the group representative said. 

The group also requested for transport and ICT facilities to ease their activities.
