KARONGI- Rehabilitation works of roads linking Karongi with its neighbouring districts and interconnecting sectors within the district has started.

The exercise is in line with this year’s proposed performance contract that places infrastructural development as a main priority.

Other priority areas include the establishment of a modern and outstanding business centre that is expected to attract traders from the neighbouring DR Congo.

According to the District Mayor, Bernard Kayumba, the third phase of the ongoing construction of a modern market in Karongi town will also resume.

It is expected to cost about Rwf300million.

"The infrastructure development of the district is our immediate target because this is a quick way of eradicating poverty among the population,” Kayumba told The New Times.

He mentioned that concerted efforts will be put in the agricultural sector, particularly in the establishment of another tea factory during the course of the year.

In a related development, most residents have already received health insurance cover.

Available statistics from the department of health show that more than 80 percent of the total population has already acquired their medical insurance cards for 2011/12.

During the interview, Kayumba disclosed that the district plans to facilitate those incapable of paying for their own medical insurance cover.

Etienne Muhawenimana, one of the targeted beneficiaries of the scheme could not hide his excitement on receiving the news.

"I am too poor to meet my own bills and the assistance from the district comes as a very much unanticipated relief,” he said.
