Parties’ forum nominates Senate representatives

The Consultative Forum for Political Organisations (CFPO) has nominated Fatu Harelimana and Perina Mukankusi as its representatives in the Senate. Harelimana is the vice president of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) and a member of the Ideal Democratic Party (PDI) while Mukankusi, who works as an economist in the Prime Minister’s Office, is from Democratic Union of Rwandan People (UDPR) party. Anicet Kayigema, the Executive Secretary of the forum said that the names of the duo were sent to the Supreme Court for vetting.

Vice president of the National Electoral Commission Fatou Harelimana is among the nominees for to represent the parties forum in the Senate.

The Consultative Forum for Political Organisations (CFPO) has nominated Fatu Harelimana and Perina Mukankusi as its representatives in the Senate.

Harelimana is the vice president of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) and a member of the Ideal Democratic Party (PDI) while Mukankusi, who works as an economist in the Prime Minister’s Office, is from Democratic Union of Rwandan People (UDPR) party.

Anicet Kayigema, the Executive Secretary of the forum said that the names of the duo were sent to the Supreme Court for vetting.

"We forwarded the names of the two candidates to the Supreme Court, as is the legal procedure and we are expecting the feed back within the legally prescribed period,” Kayigema said.

The law provides that the Supreme Court forwards the names within seven days.

The duo will replace Augustin Iyamuremye of Democratic and Socialist Party (PSD) and Stefanie Mukantagara of Liberal Party (PL), who have represented the forum in the senate since 2003.

The forum will replace two of its four representatives in the Senate, who were appointed in 2003 while others, who were nominated in 2004, still have a year to go and will be replaced next year.

Those scheduled to be replaced next year are Agnes Mukabaranga and Juvenal Sebishwi.

The Senate is made up of 26 representatives; twelve-elected representatives of provinces and the City of Kigali, two elected senators representing public and private institutions of higher education. Meanwhile, eight are nominated by the President while four are selected by CFPO.
