Local favourite Davite Giancarlo will have to be at his very best to win the last leg of the 2011 KCB mountain gorilla rally today after finishing in second place again during day two yesterday.
Giancarlo, driving a Subaru Impreza N11, was two seconds slower than day two winner Jean Yves Ranarivelo of Madagascar, who clocked one hour, thirty nine minutes and fifty eight seconds.
Burundi’s Valery Bukera got the final podium slot in a time of 1 hour, 45 minutes and 46 seconds while home boys Christakis Fitidis, Claude Kwizera and Saidi Twizeyimana finished 4th, 8th and 17th respectively.
Day two, which covered a total of 521.10kms, started at Hotel Umubano in Kigali and the drivers headed to the Northern Province. It had seven competitive sections.
Day three today will see drivers covering 465km spread over twelve competitive section in the Southern Province.
The competition counts on the national rally championship, KCB East African Rally Challenge and FIA African Rally Championship.
A total of 20 drivers are taking part in the 773km race that includes both competitive and transport sections
Besides title sponsors Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), the rally has drawn more sponsorship from Tigo, Umubano hotel, Private Sector Federation and Rwanda motors.
