Health services will now be carried out more efficiently following the distribution of more than 100 motorcycles and vehicles worth close to Rwf 276 million.

A partnership between the Ministry of Health and Global Fund will see various health workers benefit from the donation that is designed to address transport problems.

The vehicles and motorcycles were distributed to various health workers to ensure quality health service delivery across the country.

The beneficiaries included coordinators of maternal and child health units, and local NGOs with different health programs.

The Minister of Health, Agnes Binagwaho, who presided over the handover, stated that the move is an indication of the government’s commitment to invest in health.

"We are all aware that investing in health infrastructure is an engine to making provision of quality healthcare a national priority. Currently, an increased investment in health infrastructure has put Rwanda on track to attain the MDG’s and the government’s vision 2020,”she said.

She added that such investments have not only led to reduced cost of healthcare services, but also primarily reinforced delivery and access to quality health services in rural areas.

Pascal Kozivuze, one of the health workers who received a motorcycle, welcomed the move.

"There are days I have been leaving work early because I was worried about transport, yet I could still have unfinished work. Now, I will be able to do all my work without worry of transport,” Kozivuze noted.

The Global Fund administrator, Justin Karangwa, stated that the cars and motorcycles would help in the implementation and fulfilment of health obligations more effectively.
