GASABO - The Principal Commissioner of Tanzania Prison Services, Augustino Nanyaro, Wednesday, visited Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi Sector, Gasabo District.
Speaking to The New Times shortly after the tour, Nanyaro said everyone ought to witness what happened in Rwanda to avoid similar incidents.
"I have been hearing about the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, but after visiting this memorial, I have seen how a human being can become an animal, and this is very shameful and demoralising to all Africans,” Nanyaro said.
He added that when he goes back to his country, he will tell the story of the Genocide as it happened having witnessed the chronology of events as displayed at the memorial.
He said that the knowledge would also enable him to preach to his compatriots to avoid any acts of ethnic discrimination which can lead to a genocide.
"I thank the Rwandan government for the tremendous progress it has registered in just 17 years after the Genocide, and I think other countries which still have cases of conflict can learn a lot from here, in as far as reconciliation is concerned,” Nanyaro said.
He also called for more visits to memorial sites, especially by Rwandan students, saying that this would enable them to shun involvement in ethnic divisionism in the future.
