HUYE - The Mayor of Huye, Eugene Kayiranga Muzuka, has urged farmers in the district to work hard and embrace the land consolidation program to enhance agricultural production.

Muzuka made the call, Tuesday, during the launch of the new agricultural season, "A 2012”, in Mbazi sector.

During the event, residents and local leaders convened in Rugango Cell, where they planted maize on a five-hectare consolidated piece of land.

Muzuka called on residents not to delay in planting if they wanted to improve production.

He observed that hard work and mutual help would see them increase production.

"The rainy season is here. You need to start planting your crops. It is time now and do not delay,” he advised.

"But remember to plant selected crops for your specific zone and use fertilisers to boost your production”.

During this season, Huye District will prioritise maize, rice, cassava and coffee farming.

Residents who spoke to The New Times expressed their support to the land consolidation policy, noting that growing selected crops helps them to improve their productivity.

"Land consolidation is a good policy which is helping farmers to improve because growing one crop on a large piece of land enhances chances of increased yields. In addition, we get fertilisers at reduced prices,” said Donat Kamana, a farmer at Kanzeyi village.
