GAKENKE - Remains of about 200 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Gakenke District, were on Monday accorded a befitting burial at the Ruli Genocide Memorial in Ruli Sector.

Remains of 16 victims were discovered by residents from separate locations, while 182 had been buried at inappropriate places and various cemeteries and laid to rest at the new site.

The reburial was preceded by a walk to remember the victims, prayers led by leaders of various denominations and testimonies of Genocide survivors.

Speaking at the function, the Minister of Infrastructure, Albert Nsengiyumva, called on Rwandans to consider their common values which will lead to development. 

"Rwandans have to remember the victims of the Genocide, in order to avoid past mistakes and shape the future. We need to support one another in building peace and development,’’ Nsengiyumva said.

The Governor of the Northern Province, Aime Bosenibamwe, urged the residents to volunteer information that would lead to the discovery of other remains.

He further called on the residents to promote the culture of unity, tolerance and reconciliation and focus on individual progress and the country’s development.
