The 2008 Handball national league kicks off today with eight fixtures, four in each the boys and girls’ category on card at different venues around the country.
This year’s league has expanded from 12 to 16 teams after the entry of four more new teams that include Stella (boys and girls), Kicukiro and G.S Nyamasheke.
But two teams; E. S Gafunzo and KIST from year, did not register for this year’s championship for different reason, among them financial.
Reigning champions in the boy’s category, Gicumbi start the defence of their title at home against a side they beat to the title, Kigali Institute of Education (KIE).
While girls’ title holder, APAPEKI Cyuru open their title defence against new entrants, Stella at St. Joseph grounds in Muhanga district.
Last year’s beaten finalists, National University of Rwanda (NUR) face G. S St. Joseph in the opener.
Unlike last season when teams played one match a day, each team will play two games on ea match-day, according to the Handball federation new rules.
Male teams will play on different grounds in Kigali city while matches involving their female counterparts are to be played at Groupe Scolaire St.Joseph in the Southern Province.
