NYAGATARE – Parents with children serving prison sentences have been requested to visit them more frequently and contribute towards their rehabilitation process.

The Commissioner General of Rwanda Correctional Services (RCS), Paul Rwarakabije, made the call during a visit to Nyagatare Juvenile Prison in the Eastern Province.

Rwarakabije said that the main purpose of his visit was to analyse the living conditions in the prison.

Speaking to The New Times, the RCS boss said he was happy with the living conditions of the young inmates.

"I inspected various departments at the prison and I commend the progress made here. The juvenile prisoners are in good condition,” he said..

"There are a number of projects underway to improve your living conditions. These projects include setting up a recreation centre”.

Rwarakabije challenged the prisoners to adhere to government programs like civic education as part of their rehabilitation process.

"We miss our parents. We request your contribution in facilitating our parents to keep visiting us,” said one of the inmates.

The inmates lamented that one or two visit days a month was insufficient.The Nyagatare Correctional Centre accommodates 120 juvenile prisoners.
